Living in Los Gatos:

A Local's Look at Market Mornings, Trails and Holiday Traditions

Sunday morning in downtown Los Gatos starts with a short list. A few things from the farmers market, you tell yourself, and then you are still at Town Plaza Park well past the last item on it, holding a bag of whatever looked best and finishing a conversation you did not plan to have.

The market runs year round, with dozens of local farmers and food producers. It gives a Sunday here its shape, and if you are curious about living in Los Gatos, or thinking about a move, it is where I would tell you to begin.

Key Takeaways

A Sunday here has simple anchors. The farmers market, the shops and restaurants, and the creek trails all start from downtown.

The year has its own traditions. Trick or treating on a favorite street, a December tree lighting at Town Plaza Park and a children's parade bring the town out together.

Los Gatos is several settings, not one. Downtown, the valley floor, wooded hillsides and older residential areas each feel different, so where you land shapes daily life.

Visit before you decide. A Sunday morning and a weekday evening will tell you more than any list.

A Sunday, Start to Finish

The streets around Santa Cruz Avenue and Main Street are scaled for walking. The Town describes a pedestrian friendly historic core of specialty shops and restaurants, with events taking place year round, and after the market the morning stretches out without anyone trying.

By afternoon, the other half of the appeal starts from downtown too. A wide dirt trail from East Main Street at College Avenue heads south toward Lexington Reservoir, 1.8 miles away, and into St. Joseph's Hill Open Space Preserve. Head north and the Los Gatos Creek Trail passes Forbes Mill and Old Town on its way to Vasona and, eventually, San Jose.

Midpen, the regional open space district behind the preserve, says it begins about a mile from the downtown business district. The terrain is a mix of grassland, chaparral and oak woodland, and the climb to the summit is a steep one.

If steep is not the plan, the paved trail from Miles Avenue runs north to Oak Meadow Park and Vasona County Park, 1.2 miles away, with playgrounds, picnic areas and restrooms. Creeks run through the valley and the hillsides, and the town is threaded with parks and greenbelts, so open space is rarely far from wherever you are.

The Year in Los Gatos

The calendar adds its own rituals. Halloween is a neighborhood affair, and Tait Avenue is a long standing favorite for trick or treaters, with families arriving early in the evening and decorations that lean friendly rather than frightening.

Thanksgiving belongs to the kitchen, with the Sunday market for the shopping beforehand and the creek trails for the walk afterward.

December is when the town turns out together. Los Gatos in Lights, the Town's winter celebration, centers on a tree lighting at Town Plaza Park, with school performances and a visit from Santa. The Children's Christmas and Holidays Parade, organized by the Los Gatos Lions Club and LGS Recreation, draws thousands of participants, and recent seasons have added a European style holiday market on the Civic Center lawn. Look at who is running it and you see the town: school groups on the stage, a service club behind the parade.

Where You Land Matters

Anyone moving to Los Gatos is really choosing among several settings. The Town's planning profile describes a pedestrian downtown, a flatter valley floor at the edge of the Santa Clara Valley, densely wooded hillsides, and older residential areas such as Almond Grove, subdivided in the 1880s, with narrow streets and small buildings.

As a local, my advice is to test it before you decide. Walk to the nearest trail access and time it yourself. Visit on a weekday evening as well as a weekend morning, and notice how quiet the street gets at dusk, where people park on market day and how far the nearest park really is. Daily life here is shaped less by the town as a whole than by the few blocks you come home to.

Evening, at Home

A good Sunday ends the way it began, with somewhere to gather. That is the test a home in Los Gatos has to pass: whether staying in feels as good as going out.

The sellers of an upcoming Los Gatos listing describe a home that does. Morning light reaches the kitchen and the backyard, and the kitchen is where people end up, with an easy flow to the rooms around it. Outside, the yard has hosted celebrations, outdoor meals and quieter evenings, with a solar heated pool and water features, a fire feature and a shaded place to eat or simply sit. They say what they value most is the proximity to downtown, the market, the trails and everyday conveniences, and what they remember is friendship, holiday traditions and a house people keep coming back to.
